Start here: progress through the opening commissions until you can use your available Agents, then practice one defensive response and one team sequence in a repeatable fight. Decide what to improve only after you know where the team struggles.
Read the fight before upgrading it away

The official Steam description describes Basic and Special Attacks, dodges, blocks and Chain Attacks. You do not have to master all of them at once. In your first ordinary fight, watch an enemy telegraph and try to avoid the hit. In the next, look for the opportunity to link your Agents. Repeat until you can tell whether you lost because of timing, positioning or insufficient damage.
That diagnosis matters. If the problem is timing, spending currency on a new character will not automatically fix it. If the group lacks a clear role or a skill is underdeveloped, a targeted upgrade is more useful than raising the entire roster evenly.
Make a small, readable team plan
Write down what each Agent contributes in one sentence. Which Agent opens the fight? Which one handles pressure? Who takes advantage of a Chain Attack? If you cannot answer, run a few low-stakes commissions and pay attention to the transition between them. The specific best team depends on the current patch and your roster; this guide does not invent a universal ranking.
The game also alternates city life with Hollow commissions. That structure is part of its appeal, but it can make a new account feel busy. Pick a story objective and one combat skill to practice. Treat additional tasks as options, not proof you are behind.
Check the cost of a pull
Zenless Zone Zero is free to play with in-app purchases. Read the active Signal Search details in your own game before pulling: featured items, time remaining and guarantee rules. A screenshot from an older phase cannot establish what you will receive now. Set a budget first, including a zero-spend budget if that suits you.
VexRig’s takeaway: a team you understand is a better foundation than a copied list of characters. The combat suggestions above are a practice route inferred from the developer’s described systems, not the result of a VexRig hands-on test.
